Robert Mitchell (1844 – 1876)

While the precise date of Robert's birth remains unclear, Civil Birth Registrations for England and Wales indicate that he was born in Shoreditch, London during the final quarter of 1844.
Robert was ten when he first made a meaningful bond with his father in Melbourne, Australia - the first decade of his life being spent with his mother and siblings around London's Tower Hamlets.
Even then, this time was short, as his father soon departed to New Zealand.

Robert arrived in Dunedin with his mother and siblings at the age of 17.

Unlike his older brothers he had no skill or experience as a handyman but assisted in the everyday management of the Bay View Inn under his mother’s wing.
The 1867-68 New Zealand Electoral Roll has 23-year-old Robert registered as a freehold property owner in Caversham, Dunedin with later rolls showing him to be a warehouseman.

Robert's life was brief, and it remains unclear if he ever married or started a family. The date of his death is also not known, but it was noted in Musselburgh [1,2], a neighbouring area of Caversham, Dunedin.
